Polished, yet deeply personal. Casual, but elevated.” These are the mantras South Carolina interior designer Jenny Keenan of Jenny Keenan Design embraced in the creation of a newly constructed family home on the magical Golden Isles of Georgia.

“Longtime visitors to Sea Island, this couple wanted a legacy for their family—comfortable yet elegant, with plenty of space for their two sons and friends,” Keenan says. “The owners love rooms that are both beautiful and livable—perfect for gatherings but also providing a quiet retreat.”

Keenan worked in tandem with JGY Architects of St. Simons Island, noting that “while the architecture echoes the area’s Colonial American influences, it’s softened by coastal cottage charm—cedar shake siding, a cedar roof, copper accents, and a custom Carolina blue steel door.”

“While our architect dubs it as ‘Southern Shingle Style,’ I view it as a true cozy beach cottage like the one I lived in as a child,” explains the owner. “Growing up in the South, I knew how important outdoor connections were and wanted to feel like I was always outside. The light in Sea Island is mesmerizing, dancing around the house all day. And the surroundings are stunning—lush and green all year-round. We fell in love with the live oaks framing our property and made certain they thrived after construction, as they are irreplaceable!”
Echoing the beauty outside, interiors are fresh and organic, explains Keenan. Simple, natural woods were used throughout, and plaster touches simulate a sand-like feel, she says.

Mixing with these eco elements, an island color vibe pervades, from the laundry room’s playful wallpaper to the mudroom’s vibrant cabinetry. “Carefully curated art also lifts spaces with color,” Kennan notes.

Open and airy, yet grounded in warmth, arched steel windows flood the living and dining areas with sunlight, while reclaimed cypress beams offer quiet sophistication. Just off the dining room, a coastal mural by a local Charleston artist anchors the bar area. “Along with adding a Lowcountry touch, it offers a wow factor apart from just hanging a piece of art,” Keenan says. “He even used metallic paints, which brought in a touch of shine that played so well with the wood and caning on the bar cabinetry.”

“In the kitchen, a mix of painted perimeter cabinetry and white oak details creates a modern yet warm feel, while the curved window banquette echoes architectural lines outside. A plaster chandelier, basket-woven fixture, metal powder-coated pendants and more underscore the home’s energetic layers,” Keenan says.

A serene retreat, the primary suite has a soaring vaulted ceiling and a four-poster bed, with a soothing bath cloaked in white oak cabinetry and mini-print wallpaper. Upstairs, a game room serves as a lively gathering place, complete with a custom ping-pong table. Adjacent is a spunky beadboard bunk room crafted from pecky cypress and metal ladders, plus a whimsical bath.

In the end, creating a design that truly worked drove decisions. “Getting our workhorse spaces highly functional was key,” stresses the owner. “We needed to make certain that sand, children, and dogs were as welcome as friends for sunset cocktails. Between golf, tennis, biking, running, ocean kayaking, and fishing, we have a lot of equipment! We wanted each family member to have a dedicated space and a place to kick off their shoes, such as our individual lockers in the mudroom. We usually enter the house here, and we wanted it to feel welcoming and happy, too.”

Keenan agrees, adding, “The home needed to be livable, with worry-free products that last. Nothing is too precious, so they can relax and enjoy without fear of hurting anything. Even the laundry room has personality, so people don’t mind spending time there!”

And throughout, a salute to the sea predominates. Steps from the beach, yet crafted like a private sanctuary, the home’s curated outdoor areas include a hearth-warmed living room, sleek pool terrace, and well-used screened porch. Keenan adds, “My clients frequently remind me that when the afternoon breeze off the ocean kicks up, it is the perfect spot.”
