First up, we explore Jacksonville, Florida, through the lens of renowned designer Nellie Jane Howard Ossi.
Southern Home (SH): How do you believe Jacksonville’s cultural diversity and influences are reflected in its interior design trends and styles?
Nellie Jane Howard Ossi (NJHO): In the last 5 years we have seen an influx of people moving to our area from all over the country. I sort of feel like a liaison in acclimating my clients to Southeastern coastal lifestyle in addition to decorating. A lot of times clients move their furniture here from the Midwest or the Northeast and find that it doesn’t work here primarily because of the climate but also a much more relaxed and southern lifestyle.
SH: Would you share a local restaurant that you love?
NJHO: Biscotti’s! They have the most glorious cake counter you have ever seen.
SH: What would you recommend as the best cocktail bar in the city?
NJHO: Restaurant Orsay, I love their “Hey Jealousy!” drink
SH: What is your favorite hotel in the city?
NJHO: One Ocean Hotel
Are there any boutiques or shops in the city that you particularly enjoy?
NJHO: Rosie True. It’s pretty much the only place I shop. They have everything you need!
SH: Where do you typically go for inspiration?
NJHO: I am lucky enough to have done quite a bit of traveling so I often find during my adventures I am either inspired by the nature along the way or antiques that I find in little gold mine antique shops I’ve found.
SH: What is your favorite place to source unique décor or furniture pieces?
NJHO: I find Highpoint Market to be really inspiring and rejuvenating because it brings in new vendors from all around the world and also has a really fantastic antique district. I always leave market feeling excited about what I’ve seen. It’s also great to connect with other designer friends and share our new favorite finds.
SH: Do you have a favorite local artist or gallery?
NJHO: Stephen Floyd of Floyd Paint & Paper used to live in Jacksonville and he has worked with our family for many many years. He’s a very skilled artisan painter who has now ventured into the world of custom wallpaper. His style and talent are incredible.
SH: What do you consider to be the best annual event or festival in the city?
NJHO: In Jacksonville beach, our favorite event is Deck the Chairs, at Christmas. It is the perfect family holiday outing. You get a cup of cocoa and walk around to see all kinds of local festive creations where people have decked out lifeguard chairs.
