Browse Robin Rains’ valuable tips for placing antiques at home to create a one-of-a-kind room.
1. Shop for pieces that speak to you and tell your unique story.
If you truly love it you’ll find a place for it in your home. I recommended sourcing a wide variety of materials, i.e. wood, natural stones, iron and pottery to name a few. A home is much more interesting when natural materials are utilized.
2. Incorporate a sentimental element within your space to add that special touch.
Whether it’s a family heirloom or a stoneware piece that you’ve treasured for years – put it on display! Plus, it’s the perfect conversation starter, which is necessary for every interior.

3. Don’t be afraid to mix different styles, epochs and origins when placing vintage pieces.
Mixing modern upholstery with vintage pieces adds contrast and ultimately creates balance. This approach adds a bit of excitement and keeps a room fresh! As Oscar Wilde said “All beautiful things belong to the same age”.4. Utilize your collections!
Collecting treasures over time is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Find something that speaks to you and start a collection. Small curiosities are fun to source while traveling. These are more effective and interesting when grouped together.6. Don’t be afraid of the price tag!
Every piece doesn’t have to be a fine antique. Some of my favorite items are flea market finds purchased on a budget. However if you are looking to invest in your first nice vintage piece, I would recommend an antique chest. They are timeless and work in numerous rooms throughout a home.7. Display vintage objects on open shelving.
Many people forget to place antiques in inconspicuous areas, like on a floating shelf. Open shelving is the perfect place to add an extra layer of personality and character – even those quirky pieces! Antique French confit pots and vintage cutting boards are two of my go-tos!8. Make the antique a focal point!
Their beauty is often enough to stand alone, so try putting them in accent rooms where they can really shine, instead of in a large room where they can get lost. An eye catching sculptural item or vase with your favorite blooms is sometimes all that’s needed to complete a room design. I’m always searching for those unexpected items that make you think sideways; especially a brand name piece or an item of historical significance! All said, don’t forget your home needs to look and feel good to you so if you truly love a piece then you’ll find a place for it!
